BEING A TEACHER....

BEING A TEACHER IS A DIFFICULT TASK NOWADAYS, SO I DECIDED TO FOLLOW THIS PIECE OF ADVICE BY BRUCE LEE:

Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.

THE ROMANS IN BRITAIN

Interesting video about Chester.
Click on Module 7 Unit 4 B    Actually, there's a mistake because it is Module 9 Unit 4B   At the end of the programme you've got the visit to Chester.

Lately, there have been some interesting films about the time when Romans were in Britain, and especially when they were attacked by the Picts and other tribes. As well, in our study trips to UK we have been able to visit some of these Roman sites (baths in Bath last year or the ancient castle in Chester, which comes from the Latin word 'castra, castrorum').

Here are some fascinating articles about the issue:

  2. I don't know much information of Romans, but I've visited a town where they had a lot of influence, Bath.

Bath sits between green hills in the south-west of England. It 's a beuatiful town. Bath is famous for its Royal Crescent and other buildings. Hot water comes out of the ground here, and the Romans built a city with baths. Today you can visit the Roman Baths. I reckon the Romans created these springs to relax, to have a shower in the hot waters.. You can also go to the Assembly Rooms in Bennet Street or visit the Jane Austen Centre in Gay Street.

  3. Ancient Rome was an Italic civilization that began on the Italian Peninsula at the 8th century BC. It was one of the biggest empires in the ancient world. It was located along the Mediterranean Sea and his capital was Rome.

Roman Britain was a province of the Roman Empire from 43 to 409. They conquisted the three quarters of the island of Great Britain. Some Romans cities are Chester, Bath, London... In those cities they left a lot monuments such as The Andrian Wall.

This year we are going to visit a Roman City, Chester. If we go to Cheter, I guess we will visit some roman’s monuments. I think I will go there providing that I get good grades at school. In my opinion we will go there unless we find a better place to go. I wish we have fun there.

  7. Britain has got a lot of culture, because a lot of civilisations have been there. So, unless we have this in mind, we will never understand how the English language developed and why there are so many words of Latin origin in the English language, for example: pedestrian, via, versus.... It’s a well known fact that Romans stayed there for a long time, but what cities did they create and how long did they stay?

However, they left many monuments, cities and examples of Roman architecture in Britain that we can now visit
Last Easter I went to the Roman baths in Bath, they were really interesting. Next year, we are thinking about going to Chester, as long as I have good marks at school. I think that if I go, I will learn more about Roman culture. Moreover, Chester has a lot of beautiful and important monuments that we have to visit too.

In conclusion, Romans left us a lot of culture and not only in Britain. In Spain we have a lot of archaeological remains of the Romans, Muslims, Celts...

  10. I am going to tell about the Romans in Britain:

Britain is the British Isles Archipielago's largest island. The territory of it is three nations: England, Wales and Scottland.

Britain has been the target of invasions. This is for the richness of the land and its mild climate. The Celtics settled in Britain and in England, but in the year 43 DC, Romans invaded England in search of new colonies. The Romans didn't eliminate the Celts, only those who resisted.

They took the power and ruled the Britons (Celtics) but they tolerated most of their religions and cultures.

England was under the control of the Roman's Empire between 43 DC and 410 AC. When the Celts attacked the Romans in the V Century, they abandoned Britain to defend Rome and left the Celts alone.

  11. The Romans were a civilization that came to Britain a long time ago. It is said that probably, the Romans were very "sofisticated" and they influenced so much the development of the country. They used modern techniques for its time, and they made great improvements that are now reflected in our daily life.

I am studying Roman civilization in art history at my school, and they built a lot of public places, such as roads, which were used by the army, so that they could go from one place to another faster and also to transmit messages, since in that time there was no phone, and the information was carryed by a messanger.

Moreover, they introduced new foods like parsley, sweet chestnut and chickens. Besides, they were the first Christians, and built with stone churchs which were called "basilicas". Today there are some basilicas, especially well-preserved in Rome and Ravenna, and still are a great work of architecture. Basilicas were often decorated with mosaics most of which told stories about Jesus Christ or the king and his family.

Finally, the Romans spoke Latin. This language was the predecessor of many others, such as Spanish, and that's why English and Spanish have some similar words. In my opinion, study the history of the Romans, our ancestors, is very interesting, and it allows you to realize that they were the ones who invented and discovered the most important inventions in the history. Taking all this into account, it makes you wonder "how could the Romans be so intelligent?"
