BEING A TEACHER....

BEING A TEACHER IS A DIFFICULT TASK NOWADAYS, SO I DECIDED TO FOLLOW THIS PIECE OF ADVICE BY BRUCE LEE:

Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.

  2. Both writers lived their respective golden centuries, Cervantes in Spain called the "Golden Century" and Shakespeare the English Renaissance in England. The two are the most important writers of the literature of their countries. Incidentally Shakespeare died one day after Cervantes, although the death of Cervantes is celebrated on the 23rd as well as Shakespeare.

Cervantes was a novelist, poet and playwright who was born on September 29, 1547 in Alcalá de Henares and died on April 22, 1616 in Madrid. It is universally known, especially for having written The ingenious hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha, which many critics describe as the first modern novel and one of the best works of universal literature. It has been given the nickname of Prince of the Wits.

Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564. He was an English playwright, poet and actor. Known occasionally as the Bard of Avon. He was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire, England, in April 1564, who at the age of 18 married Anne Hathaway, With whom he had three children, and who died on April 23, 1616, just before his 52nd birthday.

  3. Shakespeare’s Women. His competence paralleled their complexity.

Shakespeare’s women improved as he got older. His earlier female characters such as Kate in Taming of the Shrew and Juliet in Romeo and Juliet were simple, undeveloped creatures, but his later women, such as Rosalind in As You Like It, Portia in Merchant of Venice and Viola in Twelfth Night are well-rounded. And his final creations, for example, Lady Macbeth and Cleopatra are real, psychologically convincing women. He goes from ‘’archetypical’ ’to ‘’more developed’ ’to “complex”. His characters become more convincing as he becomes more experienced.

One of his first female characters, Kate in Taming of the Shrew, is the prototype of the typical nagging difficult wife. She is sharp-tongued, quick-tempered, and prone to violence, particularly against anyone who tries to marry her.

Juliet, in Romeo and Juliet, is a simple character. She is presented as quiet and obedient adolescent, but she possesses an inner strength which enables her to have maturity beyond her years. Her character is developed during the play and the innocent teenager becomes a responsible adult. She is a more believable character than Kate.

With her quick wit, charm and her delightful verbal puns, Viola is one of Shakespeare’s most liked heroines. She has a native intelligence and is of sound judgment and shows resourcefulness in a difficult situation. It is noticeable that Shakespeare often creates female characters that are seen to be more intelligent than their male counterparts. Viola is one such character who is far more deserving than Duke Orsino with whom she is in love. He is capricious, changeable, shallow and is an emotionally driven man.

In The Merchant of Venice, Portia is another female protagonist who is far more intelligent and witty than the male characters in the play. Bassanio is only saved from a terrible death through Portia’s intelligence, quick wit and bravery as she confronts Shylock.
Rosalind is one of Shakespeare’s strongest female characters. She is intelligent, witty, warm, and has exceptional mental gifts and she possesses an unshakable integrity. She is a discerning judge of character and she can assert herself with an authority appropriate to her status. She is one of Shakespeare’s most feistiest females.

Two of the more complex Shakespeare’s characters are Macbeth and Cleopatra. Macbeth’s wife is one of the most powerful female characters in literature. She is strong, more ruthless, and more ambitious than her husband. Her ambition, however, is paralleled by the guilt she feels after the murder. It drives her to madness and finally to commit suicide.
At the beginning of the play Cleopatra is presented as the stereotypical seductress queen, but at heart she is a confused and insecure woman. Beneath her play acting she is a fully dimensional complex human being. She appears childish and self-absorbed on the outside, but internally she has charisma, strength and indomitable will which makes her one of Shakespeare’s strongest female characters.

Shakespeare’s appeal continues until this day despite a changing audience. Attitude towards women changes according the era in which we are watching the play. A 21st century audience might prefer the more feisty and profound female characters of the later plays, whereas spectators of the 19th century would tend to like the more traditional pure and meek female characters such as Desdemona in Othello.

However awe inspiring Shakespeare’s female characters may be there isn’t a play where the central protagonist is a woman. His increasing skill for creating more believable female characters might have foreshadowed one final triumphant play with a central heroine. How disappointing!

  4. Miguel De Cervantes, he was consider the maximun figure of the Spanish Literature. He is known worldwide for his book Don Quijote De La Mancha. He was known as the manco of Lepanto, because he was to war and there, he losed the hand. Formed part in the naval expeditions of Navarino (1572), Corfu, Bizerte and Tunisia (1573). In all of them under the command of Captain Manuel Ponce de León. Then, he toured the main cities of Sicily, Sardinia, Genoa and Lombardy. He remained for two years in Napoles until 1575. Cervantes was always very proud of having fought in the battle of Lepanto, which he wrote for himself in the prologue to the second part of Don Quijote.

Many critics have described Don Quijote as the first modern novel and one of the best works of universal literature, besides being the most edited and translated book of history, only surpassed by the Bible. The sources of the art of Cervantes as novelist are complex: on the one hand, Don Quijote and Sancho Panza are the parody of the knights errant and their squires; On the other hand, in them, the fidelity to honor and the struggle for the weak are exalted. In the Quijote, influence, the realism and fantasy, meditation and reflection on literature converge: the characters discuss their own identity of characters while the boundaries between delirium and reason and between fiction and reality are erased again and again. But the course of Cervantes, who attended both the imperial glories of Lepanto and the defeats of the Invincible on the shores of England, only knew the troubles of poverty and the harassment of power. Unlike his character, he never escaped his fate as a soldier and a poor soldier.

  7. Cervantes is one of the most know writers of the world and a Spanish icon. It is considered by many to be the first modern novelist.

His life wasn’t easy: he fought in the Gulf of Lepanto, where he was wounded in his left hand and that's how he earned the nickname "El manco de Lepanto". After that, he continued fighting in the Mediterranean. When he tried to come back to Spain in 1575 his ship was captured by pirates and he was taken as a slave in Algiers until 1580. but when he come back to Spain his life wasn’t better as he always had economic problems. His most known novel is Don Quixote which has had an amazing influence on later literature. It is believed that its influence can be seen in such writers as Sir Walter Scott, Charles Dickens, Benito Perez Galdos and in painters like William Hogarth and Pablo Picasso. Cervantes's fame was far greater in death than in life.

It has been a year since the searchers found Cervantes's tomb, nowadays his remains rest in the new monument in his honor in the church of San Ildefonso of the convent of the Trinitarias of Madrid, where a ceremony was held in his honor attended by important politicians.

In my view Cervantes and Shakespeare have had a enormous influence until now ( in contemporary novel, theater, films and TV series) and both of them are two universal icons of literature. I reckon it is absurd to compare them since both are just as good.

  8. 23rd April, 1616 is recorded as the death date of two of the most important writers that we've ever had. English playwright William Shakespeare and Spanish novelist Miguel de Cervantes. They didn't have too much in common, although they lived in the same era.

The English was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, and Miguel de Cervantes was born in 1547 in Alcala de Henares, a town which is near Madrid.

Shakespeare attended his home town's renowned grammar school, where he was taught Latin and the basics of rethoric and poetics. Cervantes, from a family of impoverished nobility, studied theology at the University of Salamanca.

In 1569, Miguel de Cervantes moved to Rome, where he worked as chamber assistant of a Cardinal. He then enlisted as a soldier in the Spanish Navy Infantry regiment and continued his military life until 1575, when he was captured by Barbary pirates. In 1605, Cervantes was in Valladolid when he published the first part of Don Quixote, which is considered to be the first modern novel, a classic Western literature, and it's one of the best works of fiction ever written. During the last nine years of his life, Cervantes solidified his reputation as a writer, publishing 'Novelas ejemplares', 'Viaje al Parnaso',etc.

Shakespeare, for its part, married at the age of 18 and had three children. Sometime between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part-owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. He produced most of his most known works between 1585 and 1613. His early plays were primarily comedies and histories, but then he started to write tragedies, including 'Hmalet' and 'Macbeth'.

  9. Don Quixote was written by the known writer Miguel de Cervantes. In the world, this novel is one of the most important classics. Cervantes is considered the Shakespeare of the Spanish’s letters. He was a soldier in Spain, and he fighted in the Lepanto Battle, it is said that he lost his arm, so he is known as the Manco of Lepanto.

His book is about the adventures of Alonso Quixano, a man who is renamed as Don Quixote. He has a squire named Sancho, and they go out to find adventures everywhere they go. Don Quixote is crazy because he has read a lot of novels about cavalry. One of the funniest and best known chapters is when he fights against windmills since he thinks they were giants.

On 23th April it is celebrated his death’s anniversary. In Spain it is celebrated by reading some fragments of his play. As I see it, this is an important day in Spain, although it isn't as recognized. Not everyone has read Cervantes' books, but if you ask someone who Cervantes is or what he wrote and I'm almost sure they will be able to answer.

  10. I'm going to talk about Migue de Cervantes and about Shakespeare.

Miguel de Cervantes was a soldier, novelist, poet and Spanish playwright. He is the greatest icon of Spanish literature and he is best known for having written The Quixote. This book is considered the first modern novel and one of the best work of the universal literature. Moreover, it's the most published and translated book of the history. In 1571, he fought in the battle of Lepanto, in which he lost a hand, that is why he has the nickname of Manco de Lepanto.

In the Quijote, it tells the story of a man from Almeria named Alonso Quixano who becomes crazy because of reading chivalry books. In the story, he decides travel and explore new territories, he has a squire called Sancho. The most extrange thing of this story is that Alonso Quixano thinks that the mills are giants.

On the other hand, Willian Shakespeare is the most important English writer and one of the most importat writer o f the universal literature. He was an English playwright, poet and actor. Between his work he has made the First folio, tragedies, comedies, historical works, late fiction or fantasy comedies, lost or apocryphal works, critical judgments, sonnets and extensive poems. He has a big variety of works.

From my point of view, Cervantes and Shakespeare has had a big influence in universal literature. Both of them have done works very known in all the world. Although a big part of population hasn't read yet any book of them, they know who they are. Sometimes, people compare them like which of the two is the best, I personally think that it is unnecessary because both of them are brilliant.

  14. Cervantes is the fourth of the seven children of the marriage of Rodrigo de Cervantes Saavedra and Leonor de Cortinas, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was born in Alcala between September 29 and October 9, 1547, when he was baptized in the parish of Santa Mary the Greater.

His father's family knew prosperity, but his grandfather Juan, a law graduate from Salamanca and judge of the Holy Inquisition, left home and began an erratic and dissipated life, leaving his wife and the rest of his children in destitution , So that Cervantes' father was forced to exercise his trade as a barber surgeon, which made little Miguel's childhood a tireless pilgrimage through the most populous Castilian cities. On the maternal side, Cervantes had a magistrate grandfather who became ephemeral landowner in Castile.

Miguel's fate seemed to foreshadow in part in that of his father, who, beset by debt, left Alcalá to seek new horizons in prosperous Valladolid, but suffered seven months imprisonment for defaults in 1552, and settled in Cordoba in 1553 Two years later, in that city, Miguel entered the brand new school of Jesuits. Although he was not a person of great culture, Rodrigo worried about the education of his children; The future writer was an early reader and his two sisters knew how to read, something very unusual at the time, even in the upper classes.

In 1556 Leonor sold the only remaining servant and left for Seville in order to improve economically, since this city was the gateway of Spain to the riches of the Indies and the third city of Europe (after Paris and Naples) in the second Half of the 16th century. At the age of seventeen, Miguel was a shy and stuttering teenager, who attended class at the Jesuit college and was distracted as a regular spectator of the representations of the popular Lope de Rueda, as he later recalled in 1615 in the prologue to the edition Of his own comedies: "I remembered having seen the great Lope de Rueda, an outstanding man in representation and understanding."

In 1551 the hitherto small and quiet town of Madrid had been converted into capital by Felipe II, reason why in the following years the city quintuplicate its size and population; Led again by the eagerness to prosper, the Cervantes moved in 1566 to the new capital. It is not known with certainty that Cervantes had attended university, although in his works he showed familiarity with student customs and habits; His name appears in 1568 as the author of four compositions in an anthology of poems in praise of Isabel de Valois, the third wife of Philip II, who died that same year. The book's editor, the humanist Juan López de Hoyos (likely introducer of Cervantes to the reading of Virgil, Horace, Seneca and Catullus and, above all, the humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam) refers to Cervantes as "our dear and beloved student". Others venture, however, that in the circle or school of Hoyos, Cervantes had been a teacher and not a disciple.

  18. Cervantes is one of the most famous figures in Spanish literature, and surely the most studied one at the spanish schools, he was poet, soldier and novelist, his most famous creation is Don Quixote, an unforgettable character of Spanish literature. Published when Cervantes was 58 years old, the book became extremely successful, achieving a profound influence on European literature. Sadly, the fame and success of Cervantes´s writing did little to improve his financial conditions and lifestyle.

Miguel De Cervantes was born in Madrid, and he was the fourth child of his family. He served as a soldier in a Spanish Regiment in Naples, moment when He lost his left hand because of an injury on aboard ship during the battle of Lepanto, that´s the reason why he is known as the manco of Lepanto. A few years later Cervantes was kidnapped from a ship on his way back home, He was finally liberated when His mother had the enough money to pay the kidnappers

His first published work was La Galatea. When he was not able to generate enough income from writing to run the family, Cervantes obtained a job in the government as a tax collector. He was acussed several times on charges of bankruptcy and fiscal irregularities, and another time when a man died in front of his house and the authorities suspected he was involved with the man’s death.

Miguel De Cervantes died in 1616. He is buried in the Convent of the Trinitarians in Madrid, Cervantes influence is evident in the works of many other famous writers

  28. Once upon a time, 403 years ago, two of the world´s best-known literary pioneers, named Cervantes and Shakespeare, who died on the same day: 23rd April, 1616. As a way to honour them, in 1995, UNESCO decided that the World Book Day (or The International Day of the Book) would be celebrated on 23rd April. But how much do we know about Cervantes and Shakespeare ? Let´s learn a few things about them.

To begin with, Cervantes was a Spanish writer, one of the greatest writers in the Spanish language and one of the world´s famous novelists. He was born in Alcalá de Henares, Spain, in 1547, and died on 23rd April, 1616, at the age of 68. Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright and actor, one of the greatest writers in the English language and one of the world´s famous dramatist. He was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, in 1564, and died on 23rd April, 1616, at the age of 52. While they both shared the date of death, they didn't die on the same day. Spain was using the Gregorian calendar while England was still using the old Julian calendar. So Cervantes in fact died 10 days ahead of Shakespeare.

Much of Cervantes´ life was spent in poverty and obscurity, as he was born to a deaf surgeon who struggled working in a field that was badly payed at that time. In 1570, he joined the Spanish military and was seriously injured in the Battle of Lepanto (1571). He served as a soldier until 1575, when he was captured by Turkish pirates. After five years in captivity, he was rescued, and returned to Madrid. In contrast with Cervantes, Shakespeare was born into a wealthy family and was the third of eight children to a prominent businessman and official. At the age of 20, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer and playwright.

Cervantes´ first significant novel, titled ¨La Galatea¨, was published in 1585. He achieved fame after publishing the first part of the novel ¨El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha¨, in 1605. The second part of the novel was published in 1615. Don Quijote is described as the first modern novel and the world´s most translated work after the Holy Bible. Shakespeare produced most of his known works between 1589 and 1613. The first reference to Shakespeare as a playwright came in 1592 as he had written the three parts of Henry VI. Among his most famous plays, there are the tragedies ¨Macbeth¨and ¨King Lear¨, the comedy ¨A Midsummer Night´s Dream¨and the romance ¨Romeo and Juliet¨.

Cervantes is not known so much for enriching Spanish vocabulary, but Shakespeare, instead, had a greater influence in changing the English language. English is frequently referred to as the language of Shakespeare, while Spanish is often called the language of Cervantes, which has changed less than English has since then. One thing they both have in common is that their works have inspired musicals, such as ¨Man of La Mancha¨ -from Don Quijote , and ¨West Side Story¨-from Romeo and Juliet.

In my opinion, both Cervantes and Shakespeare are giants in the world of literature who have had huge influence not only on their own languages but across the world. Even though they didn´t have too much in common, they both deserve the same recognition in the universal literature.

  29. The 23rd of April of 1616 was the date where both Shakespeare and Cervantes died. They were two of the greatest writers of all time and whose works are been read until today and will probably continue to be read and studied in the future.

It is such a coincidence that they both have the same death date that the 23rd of April has become nowadays the International Day of the Book.

The truth is that they did die in the same date but not in the same day, that ´s because while on England they used the Julian calendar in Spain they were using the Gregorian one.

On the one hand, Cervantes was born the 9th October 1547 in Alcalá, being the fourth out of seven siblings. He studied at the Jesuit college and learned to read and write at a very young age. He and his family moved to Seville trying to improve their economy ,since Seville was third biggest city of those times and could give them more opportunities.

Cervantes was sentenced to lose his arm and be arrested because he was in a fight with an important person and he had to leave the city and go to a part of Italy which was owned by Spain in order to scape. And there he became as a soldier in Diego de Urbina´s company.

He fought in Lepanto Battle (1571) and he received three injuries, one of them disabled his left arm forever so he received the nickname "the one-armed man of Lepanto".

However, he went into battle again in 1573 with his younger brother in Corfú. After that he received two letters of recommendation which aim was to give him a better position but in 1575, coming back to Spain he was captured by Turkish pirates and he was a prisoner for 5 years in Argel.

He tried to scape 4 times unsuccesfully, he was sold to the Hassán king and in 1580 he was finally freed.

Now in Spain he decided to write. He created his most famous work in 1605, El Quijote, which was a parody of the popular genre of cavalry novels.

On the other hand, Shakespeare had a complete different life. He was born in a wealthy family of Stratford-upon-Avon. We do not have much information about the childhood and adolescence of the author, but we know that with the age of 18 he married Anne Hathaway with whom he had 3 children.

He started writing when he moved to London and his first work was Venus y Adonis, a poem. He became known thanks to his theatre; he wrote 14 comedies, 10 tragedies and 10 historical dramas.

Furthermore, Shakespeare has added to the English dictionary a total of 1700 words and sometimes english language is referred as "Shakespeare language".

In conclusion, those two authors have had a very different life as I said and they had never met in person but they have both left an great legacy in their respective language, literature and even culture.

  33. Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was a Spanish writer. He was born on the 29th September, 1547 in Alcalá de Henares and died on the 22nd April, 1616 in Madrid. Before he was a writer he was a soldier. He fought in the battle of Lepanto and lost the use of a hand. After that he was sent to prison several times and finally died as a poor man. During his life he wrote a novel called Don Quixote, which became very famous after Cervantes' death. Nowadays, Don Quixote is one of the most important novels in the Spanish lietarure.

William Shakespeare was an English poet and actor. He was born on the 23rd April 1564 in Warwickshire and died on the 23rd April, 1616 in the same place. He married Anne Hathaway when he was 18 and had 3 kids. Years later, he went to London. There, he became very famous and he wrote some plays. Some of them are very famous, like Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet. He lost his son and his grandsons didn't have any children, so nowadays there aren't descendants alive. He is considered one of the most important poets in the English literature and the English language is often called the Shakespeare language.

Both of them died on the same date, but not on the same day. This happened because the calendar that people was using in Spain was different from the one they were using in England. If they were using the same calendar, Shakespeare would have died on the 3rd May of that year.

  34. I like the work of Cervantes because it is very funny and important for Spain. I prefer to be Sancho Panza rather than Don Quixote. I did a play about Don Quixote at school. I was Sancho Panza. I really liked his role. Abel Martínez Padilla 2A

  36. Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was born in Alcalá de Henares in 1547 and he died in 1616 in Madrid, he was a Spanish writer, and he is usually remembered for having written Don Quixote, which was his most famous novel, and in my opinion one of the best novels of all the times and also one of the best selling books in history, but he also wrote other important novels like La Galatea or The Generous Lover. Before being a writer, Cervantes had been a soldier and he participated in a lot of wars. One of these wars were the battle of Lepanto, where the writer lost his left hand, and for this we can refer to him with the name of the one-armed of Lepanto, and he had a lot of more difficulties in his life.

Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford, England and died in 1616 in Stratford, England, he was an English writer, poet, and he is considered the greatest writer in the English language and the world's greatest dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". He principally wrote plays and sonnets, although he also wrote three long narrative poems. He is very famous because his plays have been translated into a lot of languages and his plays are performed very often in a lot of theatres. Some of his gratest plays are Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Othello, King Lear or Macbeth and all of them are consideredto be among the finest works in tyhe English language.

These two writers have a fact in common besides that they were writers, or that they are very famous, and is that both writers died in the same day and in the same year, they died on 23rd April, 1616, and it is a strange coincidence that two of the greatest writers of all times died on the same day. For this reason, the World Book Day is on 23 April, as a commemoration for these writers, this annual event is organized by the UNESCO to promote the reading. The first World Book Day was celebrated on 23 April in 1995, and continues to be recognized on that day.

Throughout his life, Cervantes had many interesting experiences. For example, as a young man, he joined the Spanish army and fought in the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. During this naval battle, he suffered serious injuries to his chest and hand, earning him the nickname "Manco de Lepanto." . Despite his injuries, he bravely carried on.

After the battle, Cervantes was captured by pirates and spent several years as a prisoner in Algiers. During his time in captivity, he attempted to escape several times without success. These experiences influenced his later literary work.
