BEING A TEACHER....

BEING A TEACHER IS A DIFFICULT TASK NOWADAYS, SO I DECIDED TO FOLLOW THIS PIECE OF ADVICE BY BRUCE LEE:

Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.

Fears, phobias...number 13!!!

Do you know what 'triskaidekaphobia' is?   Here's some information about the issue.

What is the difference between a phobia and a fear if there is any?  Read this article about it:

Fear or Phobia? (The Washington Post)

and here are

America’s top fears: Public speaking, heights and bugs (The Washington Post)

Another interesting article about the topic:

Phobias: The rationale behind irrational fears (The Guardian)

All these articles would be an excellent preparation for this Selectivity exam (Andalucia)  >>>   Triskaidekaphobia  (option A)

  1. Do you remember when you were a child and you weren't able to go upstairs alone? Or when you had to sleep with the light on? Me, I remember all that like it was yesterday, and nowadays, there are fears that I haven't overcome. For instance, when I have to go upstairs, I always do it singing loudly... or when I'm getting home and there are no one in the street, I tend to go faster and faster. Furthermore, I remember the day when I was in my bed and there was a boy staring at me in the window, he was wearing a white T-shirt with red stripes, a red cap, and jeans; I was very scared, so I covered my head with the sheets until I felt asleep. It was such a horrible nightmare!
First of all, I'm going to write about what a phobia is. Then, I'll move to explain how we can overcome them, and finally, I'm going to give you my opinion on this issue.

Now, I'm going to explain the difference between fear and a phobia with an example: "It's common to have fear if you are traveling by airplane and you feel turbulence. However, if that fear doesn't let you get on the airplane, that is a phobia", so, a phobia is an intense fear of objects and determined situations that stop you from doing something.
In the children case, there are different kinds of fear:
    - Two-year-old children: generally they feel fear when they hear quite loud sounds, or when they are separated from their parents.
    - Children between 3 and 6 years: they fear the darkness, sleep alone and imaginary characters as ghosts and monsters.
    - Children from 7 years: they're afraid of death, illnesses...

Secondly, phobias can be treat with therapy. One of the most known treatments is to run the risk gradually the person to the object or situation which causes him fear. Furthermore, you can make use of some medicine, although.. of course, with medical supervision.

All in all, I believe face fears is the best way to overcome them. We should make aware that there are nothing that can limit us, and then, face it. However, I'd also like to say that fear has always existed, and thanks to it, we can avoid threats, it prepares us to face them, that is to say, fear is an alarm which warns us of danger.

  2. Firstly, I'm going to describe what triskaidekaphobia is, and then, I'm going to explain the difference between phobia and fear.

Triskaidekaphobia, also referred to as 13-digit phobia, is the irrational fear of the number 13.

A fear is an emotional response to a real or perceived threat. They are common in the population and they're often normal.
Phobias are usually mental disorders. A phobia is similar to a phobia, but the difference is that the anxiety that they experience is so strong that it interferes with their quality of life.
For example, many people are afraid of spiders, that's a fear. However, if you have a spider phobia you spend much time worrying about spiders and you will avoid places and activities in order to avoid them.

Now, I'm going to name the most common fears. Bugs, snakes and other animals, heights, blood, flying, strangers, clowns and ghosts.

However, the most common fear of children is darkness. When I was Little, I was afraid of darkness, so I used to sleep with the light on. But as you grow up, you have less and kless fear until you overcome it.

  3. First of all I want to start with the definitions of these two concepts:

-The phobia is an intense and irrational, sickly fear, towards a person, a thing or a situation.

-Fear is a sense of anguish provoked by the presence of a real or imagined danger.

In Spain, 6% of the population currently suffer some type of phobia, although this percentage is "difficult" to estimate because there are patients who don't go to the consultation to treat this problem, as commented the vice president of the Spanish Society of Psychiatry.

Currently they consider that there are three types of phobias: specific, social and agoraphobia.

    - Specific phobia is characterized by fear or intense anxiety about a specific object or situation, such as airplanes, heights, animals, injections or dentists.

    - Social phobia consists of intense fear or anxiety in one or more social situations in which the individual is exposed to being evaluated by others, such as a conversation, meeting with strangers, being observed eating in public or acting in front of others.

    - Agoraphobia originally was intense fear of open spaces although it has expanded to use public transport, closed sites, queuing, being in the middle of a crowd or being away from home alone.

From my point of view, children who have a phobia from childhood, if they don't seek help, grow with it and have a great impact on them throughout their lives. Although I have never had any phobia and therefore wouldn't know how to be able to help these people, since I have never lived that situation.

To summarize my advice would be to seek help as soon as possible.

  4. Triskaidekaphobia is fear of the number 13. This phobia or fear of the number 13 usually its causes are linked to panic-related experiences or genetic conditions. This fear is so big that people on Friday the 13th decide to not go out on the streets in fear of something bad happening to them. Another belief is that Jesus was crucified on Friday so that's why Friday the 13th is considered a day for back luck. Due to these belifs of Friday the 13th United States loses around 9000 million dollars, because people decide to not leave their houses.

  5. Triscaidekaphobia is fear of the numbre 13. The origin of this peculiar phobia can be in the bible or in the nordic mythology. In both cases, they relate the number 12 to gods, perfection and good things; and the number 13 to misfortunes. Because of this, many planes don't have row 13, thay pass from row 12 to row 14. Some of the also drop row 17 because Italians consider it brings bad luck.

  6. Triskaidekaphobia is the irrational fear of the number 13. Fear of the number 13 can be handled by psychologist using exposure therapy in combination with drugs. In my own words, I don't believe in any superstition. How would a simple number cause this fear? I don't know...

  8. I´m sure that all, or almost all of us, have or have had a fear or phobia of something once in life. When you were a child ,you were probably afraid of the dark , but do you know the difference between fear and phobia ?.

Fear is what you feel when you are in a situation of real or imaginary danger for example when you have an accident. Fhobia is the intense fear that you have to a person , a thing or situation for example spider phobia. In fact, phobia can appear after a fear that we have had in a dangerous situation like an accident.

There are three types of phobias : specific phobias , social phobias and agoraphobia . Agoraphobia isn't just a fear of open spaces, it describes a fear of any situation where escape would be difficult. Specific phobias are probably the most recognised. They are an irrational fear of a specific thing or situation like phobias of animals or blood. Social phobias are when you have an irrational fear of how people will react to you in a situation like the fear of rejection.

I think that fears or phobias only appear because of our insecurities and we should face them to stop having them

    1. In fact, the triskaidekaphobia is the fear of the number 13. There also are superticious people who say that if the day is Tuesday 13th, you are going to have bad luck.

I can't find a reason why the people can be afraid about a such a silly thing like a number... but I hope that it can be handled by psychologists using therapy or something like that
