BEING A TEACHER....

BEING A TEACHER IS A DIFFICULT TASK NOWADAYS, SO I DECIDED TO FOLLOW THIS PIECE OF ADVICE BY BRUCE LEE:

Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.

Rascals are no longer just naughty boys

In the old days rascals were just innocent kids who got into trouble because of some mischieves they got involved with. That would be the case of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.

Remember that The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is one of the compulsory readers we have got next school year for the level of 2º Bachillerato. Here's a link to the project done by Joaquín García (Project about The Adventures of Tom Sawyer)and now I present two videos about its writer Mark Twain Mr García provided us with (Thanks, Joaquín):

Mini-biography about Mark Twain

Mini cartoon documentary on Mark Twain for kids

and here's the song Tom Sawyer by the group Rush

However, nowadays sadly we see that some teenagers are no longer just naughty boys, but become real terrorists, as it happened in Barcelone some days ago. Here are some articles related to the issue:

  1. At the moment there are many naughty children, that the parents do not know how to educate and when they grow only they get in problems for pleasure. But this is due to a bad education in their homes or because the parents pass from the child or because the child has a lot of character and it is impossible to educate him.

In the old days children when they were little always got into trouble, especially when playing in the street and you were fighting with the neighbors to be making noises or things like that, but when you grew up, you stopped getting into something that does not currently happen.

I believe that these children who only seek to get into trouble, they do to attract attention for lack of affection. I know a lot of people who just needed a little affection to stop being a rebellious person and start acting like an adult.

Although if the child only seeks to get in trouble because he likes there are many places where you can take the child to be educated, for example reformatories or military centers. But for my opinion in these places they steal all children from people, so it should only be used in very extreme cases.

  2. Nowadays, there are more naughty boys than there used to be at other times. I think that one of the main reasons is that their parents have to work and don't have enough time to raise their children.

Parents are the most responsible for the behaviour of their children. They should set a good example to them when they are kids so that they have a good education and learn to have responsibilities when they are older. If parents don't control their children, children will do whatever they want. On the contrary, parents can be all the day trying to educate their children, but they can't, they are naughty boys.

Naughty boys usually get into trouble such as Tom Sawyer or Huckleberry Finn. Some of them can take part in robberies, attacks to a big number of people as in the case of terrorism. Certain Moroccans become radical and participate in attentats like the one of Barcelona in which 13 persons died. All of the terrorists were young people and they had a normal life, maybe they were naughty boys.

In conclusion, all parents must give their children a good education. They shouldn't permit them to do all they want since they can get into trouble easily, which is a big problem.

  3. Nowadays, current rascals are very different from the old ones. Some people say that children become naughty because their parents don’t give them a good education or parents don’t pay enough attention to their little children.

However, others say that it is a problem created by our society since people spend too much time on the internet. Futhermore, most of them would rather spend time in social networks than get together with friends. Therefore, if they don't share time in society, they won’t be able to learn rules.

And that is not all, when naughty boys get older, they might become a bad person. Indeed, there are a lot of wicked people who injure innocent people, as it happened in Barcelona some days ago. They just did it by fanaticism, actually.

In conclusion, it is clear that bringing up children is a difficult task, but older people have to do it well with younger people if we want to have well-behaved women and men in the future. By the way, there is a proverb that says “like father like son”.

  5. I am going to write about The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. It is a novel written by Mark Twain in 1876. It is about a young boy who grows up along the Mississippi River and it is set in the 1840s in the fictional town of St Petersburg, inspired by Hannibal, Missouri, where Twain spent his childhood. He used his own happy memories in Hannibal and real events from his childhood to create the right background. Indeed, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer has been popular with people of all ages since it was written. Maybe this is because everybody can identify with the life of a typical small town and look back to their childhood.

According to the characters, my favourite one is Tom Sawyer. He is an average boy and he is thought to be a rascal, but he has a good heart too. During the novel, he becomes earnest and responsible. Other important characters who appear are Huck Finn and Joe Harper; both of them are Tom’s best friend. And so does Becky, who is Tom’s sweet love. They even get engaged. And Polly, who is Tom’s aunt. She brings him up after the death of Tom’s mother.

What about the author? Mark Twain (1835-1910) was the name used by the American writer, Samuel Langhorne Clemens. After the death of his father, he had to leave the school and go to work. He started to write for a newspaper, so he moved to St Louis, Philadelphia and New York. Later, he returned to the Mississippi and became a river pilot. The name Mark Twain was taken from words the boatmen shouted when they reached safe water on the river. He wrote a book, Life on the Mississippi, about this happy period of his life. In 1869, he wrote The Innocents Abroad, which is about a voyage through the Mediterranean Sea. It gave him his place among the best writers of the time. He married and raised a family of three daughters. After a trip to England, he wrote one his most popular stories, The Prince and the Pauper. In 1876, he wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, followed in 1885 by The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. In his last years he suffered the loss of his wife and two of his daughters. As a result, he became bitter and cynical, which he showed in his later writing.

All in all, I think that this novel is a great book to read for anyone who loves classic stories. It reminds me of my childhood, when I spent hours and hours out door playing with my friends. It was such a good time! We wanted to feel free and independent. We always wanted to be spies or police officers. Now life has changed a lot. As I see it, currently children don’t enjoy their free time as much as children did twenty years ago. Nowadays, they prefer to stay at home playing video games. Personally, I wouldn’t change any aspect of my childhood, this time will never return.

  6. In my opinion we shouldn´t compare the old days rascals, or naughty boys, whatever you like to call them, whith the today´s ones, I mean It wouldn´t be fair. I have heard many times elderly people saying than in the past young boys and girls didn´t have that bad behaviour compare to the nowdays young boys and girls.

And I´m not very far from that opinion, but mine it´s a little bit different, I completely agree with those who say that the nowdays young boys behaviour is inadmissible, there are even someones who steal something from others just for fun, who puncture car wheels for no reason, maybe to say his/her friends, look what I´ve done, Am I not a genius yet?

While, In the past they really had that necessity, as we can see in The adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.

All in all, I think this it´s just a trend, that will surely will pass in some years, but I could be wrong, because kids just want everybody´s attention, it´s a biological fact

She recounts Tom Sawyer's childhood adventures, a child that grows during the antecedent of the Civil War in «St. Petersburg », a town on the Mississippi River coast inspired by Hannibal, where the author grew up.

According to the characters, my favourite one is Tom Sawyer. He is an average boy and he is thought to be a rascal, but he has a good heart too. In conclusion, I think that everyone has readed this story and for this reason it is so important. I hope that in many years and during more generations keep reading this story because nowadays do not read novels like these.

    1. Today I am going to write about “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”. The story is about a boy called Tom, who is known for his bad behaviour, and is always looking for more exciting ways to spend his time. In their search for adventure, Tom and his friend Huckleberry Finn run away to live on an island as pirates, look for a buried treasure and track down some real robbers.

Despite the fact that it looks like as a novel for children, actually it is also appealing for adults who looks back on their own childhood with fond reminiscences. In fact, in his preface to the first edition, Twain wrote, "Although my book is intended mainly for the entertainment of boys and girls part of my plan has been to pleasantly remind adults of what they once were themselves, and what they felt and thought."

What about the author? Everyone knows him by the name of Mark Twain, but actually his real name was Samuel Longhorne Clemens. He was born in Florida, Missouri, on 30th November, 1835. Although his family was not wealthy, Twain apparently had a happy and secure childhood. It is known that during four years Twain piloted riverboats along the Mississippi. During this time, he became familiar with the towns along the mighty River and met the characters who would be in his future novels, especially Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. The begining of his literary career started in 1865 with the launched of "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County".

From my point of view, there is a large number of character and most of them are unimportant, but all of them bring something different due to their respective personalities and characteristics, for example: aunt Polly shows what is unconditional love. However, if I had to choose one of them I would choose Tom Sawyer, since he is adventurous and kind as he never made fun of Huck for being poor like the other children, and Huckleberry Finn, because he reckons that money is not neccesary in order to be happy.

To conclude, I would like to add that Twain is not only known for “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”, he also has a huge amount of novels that have been succesful and celebrated around the world, such as: “The Prince and the Pauper”. One interesting fact about Mark Twain is that he was born in 1835 during the appearance of Haley's Comet, and he died during the next appearance of Haley's Comet, 75 years later.

He lives in a small town and he gets into trouble with his friends. This book has become a classic portrait of mischievous youth.

  11. Today, I´m going to write about "The adventures of Tom Sawyer". This book was published in 1876 by Mark Twain. The book is about
the story of a few months in the life of this child who lives in a small city in the southwestern United States on the banks of the Mississippi. Raised by his aunt Polly, who loves him from the heart, but who submits him to a discipline that makes him absurd and unpleasant. On the other hand is the unforgettable friend Huckleberry Finn, who is a boy who wanders the streets, who was abandoned by his parents and is questioned by the prejudiced look of adults; but, nevertheless, together they will live humorous and dramatic adventures.

What about the author? Mark Twain was a popular American writer, speaker and humorist. He wrote highly successful works such as The Prince and the Beggar, but is known, above all, for his novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

Personally, at first I thought it would be a book for children but as the story progressed I saw that it could also be a good book for more adult people. Things like the contrast between Tom's vision and the way of seeing the things of the people around him, the sad story of Huck ...
If I had to stay with a character in the story that would be Huck, his personal life I liked a lot and his way of being, something more rational than Tom as well.

  12. Today I am going to write about a book called 'The Advemtures of Tom Sawyer'. It is a novel writen by Mark Twain in 1876. This book tells us the story of a rascal and a naughty boy called Tom, who is always looking new trips and pranks to do. Tom does all this with his friend Huckleberry Finn, a boy who was abandoned by his parents, in their quest to found adventures, they go to live on an island where they found a treasure and go after a robber.

Although it is considered a novel specially written for children, it is read by many adults who want to go back on their childhood, even the author recommends it for adults. According to the characters, this novel has the typical naughty boy of some years ago, Tom Sawyer, this character is my favourite one because he is most naughty but he is a good person in reality. In the course of the story we can see his evolution.

What about the author? Mark Twain was born the 30th of November, 1835 and died the 21st of April, 1910. He was a popular writer, speaker and American humorist. He wrote successful works such as The Prince and the Beggar or A Yankee at the Court of King Arthur, but is best known for his novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and his sequel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. He didn't belonged to a wealthy family, however, he looked very happy childhood. He is known to have been piloting riverboats along the Mississippi. By this reason he wrote this book: Life on the Mississippi, about these years of his life.

To sum up, I would like to recommend this novel because although is specially written for children is an every ages novel which can be read by everybody. One thing that has caught my attention in this book is the peculiar view of Tom of seeing the life and the other ways of being of the other characters, which contrast very much with Tom's vision.

  13. I'm going to talk about "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer". It's a novel written by Mark Twain in 1876. The book is about a boy called Tom, who looks for new adventures next to his friend Huckleberry Finn. Even Tom gets to fall in love with Becky, but that love broke when Becky heard that Tom was engaged to Amy Lawrence.

What about the author? Mark Twain was born on November 30, 1835 in Florida and died on April 21, 1910 in Redding. He was a popular American writer, speaker and humorist. He is known especially for his novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. But this book is going to be banned in some American schools for using the word "nigger". Other prominent books are The Prince and the Pauper, Life on the Mississippi, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, and finally, A Tramp Abroad for his travels in Europe.

According to the characters of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, my favourite one is Huck Finn because he is the least loved boy by the mothers of the town, although his children adore him. He is Tom's best friend and although his appearance and way of life are not exemplary, I admire him so much that, despite having orders not to approach him, Tom have never hesitates to disobey his aunt and live fantastic adventures with him.

To sum up, I would like to recommend this novel because although is specially written for children is an every ages novel which can be read by everybody. The parents are happy because when they were little they were the same as Tom and Huck, and the children of today look like they used to have fun before.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer incorporates several different genres. It resembles a bildungsroman, a novel that follows the development of a hero from childhood through adolescence and into adulthood. The novel also resembles novels of the picaresque genre, in that Tom moves from one adventurous episode to another. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer also fits the genres of satire, frontier literature, folk narrative, and comedy.

At mid-career, he combined rich humor, sturdy narrative, and social criticism in Huckleberry Finn. He was a master of rendering colloquial speech and helped to create and popularize a distinctive American literature built on American themes and language.

All in all, I would recommend this novel to readers of all ages since I am sure they will enjoy it.

  20. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a book which was published between 1876 and 1878 and written by the american Mark Twain. It is a history that many people know about. It has many different genres, like adventure or humor. The story takes place in a fictional town, San Petersburgo, Missouri, created by the imagination of the author. It is written with a third person, and sometimes this narrating makes some comments about what is happening.

There are many characters throughout the novel. First, the main character is Tom Sawyer, a boy who lives with her aunt Polly. He is adventurous and over the whole story, he is going through many experiences which finally make him change. Huckleberry Finn is the most famous character which Twain has created. He is a boy who is often in trouble but he gets out of them. He is around 12 years old. Rebbeca Thatcher (Becky) is the daughter of the judge and the person who Tom failed in love with. Her aunt, Polly, is a very correct person and despite her annoyances with Tom, she really worries about him.

The book tells the story about Tom, who doesn't like studying at school because it results boring for him. He prefers going out to look for new adventures. He also shares them with their friends, Huckleberry Finn and Joe Harper. One of the adventures was going into a cemetery, and when they arrived they looked at something which they promised to shut up because it was a murder . After a trial, Tom confesses and from that moment, he waits for revenge. The best adventure Tom lives was with Becky in a cave.

The real author's name is Samuel Langhorne Clemens but he writes by the pseudonym of Mark Twain, which comes from an expression that was used by navels of Mississippi for a measurement. He grew up in Hannibal (Misuri). He didn’t finish her studies and after going out of school he worked on many things, like printing, navigator pilot, reporter. Apart from this book, another which also has many success was “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”.

To sum up, I think that this story shows the innocence, some prank larks and also how he was reprimanded. From my point of view it is an entertaining lecture which transports us to another time and to another place. I would recommend it to every child who wants to read something fun or to elder people who want to look back on their childhood.

The novel has elements of humour, satire and social criticism; features that later made Mark Twain one of the most important authors of American literature. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is set in the fictional small town of St. Petersburg, Missouri, some time around the middle of the nineteenth century. It is likely that the town was inspired by Twain's own boyhood home of Hannibal, Missouri.
Important locations to the events of the story within this setting include: Tom's Aunt Polly's house, the school house, the church, the river and Jackson Island where Tom and his friends play pirates, the caves where Tom and Becky get lost, and the town's graveyard.

His literary talent took off with The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, his masterpiece, and one of the most standing out in American literature. It should also be noted The adventures of Hukleberry Finn (1882), literary work setting in Mississippi river too, and Life on the Mississippi (1883). He was recognized worldwide during the last years of his life, and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Oxford (England), in 1907. He died on April 21, 1910 in New York.

Moreover, the author himself expressed it in this sentence: "Although my book is mainly intended for entertainment of the boys and girls, part of my plan has been to remind adults in an entertaining way of what they once were, and what they felt and thought. ". This novel transports you to another world. It is a very interesting book that I highly recommend because it reminds you of good times from your childhood, like when we spent hours and hours playing outdoors with our friends. Now life has changed a lot. Nowadays Most children do not enjoy their free time as much as children did a few years ago, today they prefer to stay playing video games.
