BEING A TEACHER....

BEING A TEACHER IS A DIFFICULT TASK NOWADAYS, SO I DECIDED TO FOLLOW THIS PIECE OF ADVICE BY BRUCE LEE:

Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.

False impressions

We sometimes may get wrong impressions when we see certain behaviours. Here's an example:

Listening exercise to do: Having a row or asking for directions (6 Minute English, BBC Learning English)

Certain people may look nice at a first impression (remember this post in this blog: Do you trust first impressions?), but they may turn out to be evil. For example, we all thought Selectivity exams were so difficult, but when we did one we found out they weren't 'that' difficult (pay attention to the colloquial use of 'that' instead of 'so').

I don't like politics at all. Actually, I hate it, as they only try to manipulate people. However, I think it is important to read something about the referendum in Catalonia regarding the possibility of including this topic in the Selectivity exams. Here are some articles to read about the issue:

And here are some tasks to do with this old selectivity exam:

ENGLISH: THE LANGUAGE OF THE 21ST CENTURY
By the year 2000, a quarter of the world's population will speak English. For some 400 million people English will be their first language. But for another 1,100 million, English will be a second or third language of choice for business, science and popular culture. Three quarters of the world's mail, for example, is currently written in English.

But why is English rising so far above the world's other languages? There are no clear linguistic reasons for the global dominance of English. The grammar is complicated, the pronunciation eccentric, and the spelling peculiar. But a language becomes powerful when a nation becomes powerful. This power may be military or cultural or economic, as is the case of the U.S.A. Another key factor is flexibility. English has borrowed vocabulary from more than 150 languages.

However, as the language spreads among non-native speakers, it will invariably be transformed to suit regional needs: Local vocabulary and pronunciation will replace existing British and American usages. Dictionaries of Asian, American, Caribbean and South African English have already been published. We may soon experience the emergence of a neutral conversational English for international use, with each nation retaining its national variations.

  1. It is said that first impressions really matter, as "you make only one first impression" and that they could greatly influence on how you are going to be treated and viewed. In this essay I'm going to talk about how important first impressions are, what the people think about all of this, and finally I'll write a bit about false impressions before giving my opinion.

First of all, if it's the first time you meet someone, surely you will observe him/her in detail, you will notice the clothes he/she wears and even the way he talks. Afterwards, you will realize the kind of relationship you are going to have, according to what he likes doing on his spare time, in what he's interested, etc.

From my point of view, the most important thing you have to consider when you meet a person for the first time is his personality, that is to say, if you have with him, if he's friendly or not. However, we shouldn't trust so much first impressions, since there are also false impressions. A person might being lying about himself, so I reckon we must to take some time to know well him. For example, there are people who lie about the music they like listening, due to the fact that he wants to please someone.

In my opinion we shouldn't trust first impressions, because in my case, I'm so shy that the first time I meet new people I keep quiet. However, when I take confidence I'm outgoing. What I do think is that we always must be ourselves, and ensure that a person is trustworthy before telling him our secrets.

    1. Do you trust first impressions? Do you think the first impressions you have of a person when you first meet him/her are important? or are they just a mask to hide his or her real personality? Here is the key question. First, I'm going to talk about how important first impressions are, later, I'm going to talk about their consequences in the society and finally, I'll give my point of view about this issue.

Nowadays, having good impressions are very important when you meet new people, when you arrange a date, if you are looking for a job,.....The way you talk, you dress, you see, you behave,....can make a better or a worse impression of you. When you meet a person you should watch him or her in detail, focus on what he says or on how he says it. Then you should decide what kind of relationship you are going to have with him or her. However, I think you must make sure he isn't lying you because false impressions can also exist. There are many people who lie to give a false image of him or her. In Spanish this action is known as selling someone the motorbike.

From my point of view, first impressions haven't got more importance than really knowing a person. This is what I think because in my case, I'm a very friendly and cheerful person, but when I meet someone I'm more serious and shy than usual. I think you should get to know a person by telling him or her about your private life or your secrets, is convenient be a prudent person than being very social for the first time.

  4. We often get carried away by our first impression, which is usually determined by social stereotypes and our own prejudices. In this way misunderstandings arise and we can make the mistake of treating others unfairly by letting ourselves be carried away by the image that is in our mind.

We all get carried away by stereotypes. A few seconds after having met someone, even without having exchanged even a word, we are already developing a theory about who he is and what his personality is like.

In my opinion I think we should know before judging and that we should not question anyone simply because of their physical appearance, we should first know it because behind that stereotype there may be wonderful people.

  5. The impression is something quite important in our present, but not always the first impression is according to how is the person.

A very controversial issue regarding first impressions is that they don´t give you a job because of your appearance. For example, people with tattoos, piercings or unusual hair colors will not be picked up for any work. Why? The reason is that people see it as something strange and are unable to open their minds. For a person to wear a piercing or tattoo doesn´t mean that they aren´t qualified to perform such a job. We must stop judging people by their physical appearance and in the case of jobs, should take the best qualified people for these jobs, because your physical appearance doesn´t say how is your condition as a person or how is your intellect.

From my point of view, we shouldn´t let ourselves be guided by the impression that people give to simple dresses since they can lead us to error. We must take time to get to know the person and then we can define what he / she is like but never before knowing his / her personality.

  6. The impressions of a person are the appearances, gestures, manners, that we receive from a person. It is always said that the first impression is the most important, since when we do not know someone we are guided by the impression they give us.

Currently we live in a society in which we care a lot about giving good impressions and pretending something that we are not, giving more importance to material things, actually on many occasions we do not know people but rather we know what they have.

This has been rather encouraged thanks to social networks, in which a stereotype is created to be perfect, and where only the good things of people appear, leaving behind their problems, their not so good part. This has also led to insecurity in certain people who believe these false lives.

From my point of view, we must not get carried away by false impressions, but we must know people well, since many live in a cloud, in which there are only lies and want to imply that they are superior for things that in most cases they are lacking.
