Laughing or not laughing? That is the question.



Laughing is supposed to be positive in most of the cases, but have a look at these newspaper articles and then do the listening exercise and you will discover that it is all that glitters is not gold >>>>>

  2. Laughing is something natural for humans, we produce sounds and movements as a consequence of a funny thing. I've always thought that it was neither beneficial nor harmful to us. Scientists have differents opinions.

    On the one hand, scientists say that it is healthy because it helps you to reduce the effects of stress and it releases endorphins, which are natural painkillers. Due to this benefits, a laughter therapy has been created in order to laugh in individual or group sessions. I think it is a waste of time since you can better go out with your friends or family and you will probably laugh with them.

    On the other hand, it is said that laughing is not beneficial to us, some people even say that it can kill you! They say that laughing can dislocate jaws, cause headaches or provoke cardiac arrhythmia among others. I think that's a stretch.

    In my opinion, we should laugh whenever we want because it is a sign of happiness and it probably keep us away from our problems for a moment. If we try not to laugh, we will be all the time serious or unhappy.

  3. Smiling makes us more accessible, more friendly, and therefore generates an environment of well-being and trust among those around us. Smiles are free and contagious.
    For a study by scientists at the Center for Cognitive Neurosciences at Duke University, a group of volunteers was asked to look at a series of photographs of smiling people, and another group of serious people; all with the names of the individuals portrayed. The study showed with the images taken from the volunteers' brains, who remembered more the names of the people who came out smiling in the photographs, than those that appeared serious.

    In addition the human being prefers to remember people who have been kind to us in case we should relate to them in the future, says Takashi Tsukiura, author in Neuropsychology.

    A good smile, a sincere smile, not only changes the expression of the face, but also, accompanied by laughter produces endorphins, these are a natural painkiller that produces the body and that generate a sense of well-being, reduce physical pain and emotional as well as stress
    The brain does not know to distinguish between a false smile and a true smile, that is why you should strive to smile, although sometimes you are not in the mood for it, you will have a positive effect on you, because your brain will register as if in reality you were happy. Also, surround yourself with your loved ones and friends who make you feel full and happy, will make it easier to get more out of a smile. We must surround ourselves with optimistic and happy people in order to get the best of ourselves.

    From my point of view smile is the best medicine for all the problems of our day and we should always be smiling and in a good mood showing our best smile

  4. Laughter is a biological response produced by the organism in response to certain situations. Laughter has a evolutionary and genetic origin. Scientists says that human being, chimpanzees and orangutans are the unique living beings which can laugh.

    On the one hand, laugter decrease the cortisol level, cortisol is caused by the stress and also laugter causes which the natural killer cells (a type of immune cell that attacks virus and tumour cells) is increased.

    On the other hand, scientists says that laugther has disadvantages. For instance, the force of laughing can dislocate jaws, prompt asthma attacks, cause headaches, make hernias protrude.

    I think that laughing is synonymous of good health because it causes a better immune system.

  5. The action of laughing is something natural and normal for humans. We don't know exactly why we laugh, but most of times it isn't produced by a joke, it's a reflex act that we do unconsciously. Moreover, we are very lucky because it's free and it doesn't make us do a big effort. Let's talk something about it.

    Studies of numerous universities have tested that we laugh about seven times each ten minutes when we are talking with someone. However, there is controverial with this theme because some studies say that laughing is like a medicine which increases the level of natural killer cells and reduce the level of cortisol in our blood flow. Ancient studies said that the force of laughing could dislocate jaws, prompt asthma attacks, cause headaches, make hernias protrude and that it could provoke cardiac arrhythmia, syncope or even emphysema. Nowadays, new studies have shown this statements were too exaggerated.

    From my point of view, I think laughing is extremely good for your health, it reduces the level of stress and it makes your life easier to face. Thats the main reason I try to smile and laugh as much as I can. I'm almost all time smiling and I laugh a lot with my reduced group of friends.

  9. From my point of view, laughing is something natural that we do everyday. It is said that laughing is the best medicine for everything or the more you laugh, the longer you will live, I have always thought that they were only expressions but they seem to be true.

    Some scientists have studied the effects of laughter and they have come to the conclusion that it is very beneficial. Some advantages of laughing are: it provides a full-scale workout for your muscles and produces endorphins.

    Nowadays, there is a huge bunch of people who go to laughter therapies in order to relieve stress. This therapy is available in group or individual sessions. This kind of therapy is very popular among adults who say that it really works and when they arrive at home their mood is much better.

    However, other scientists say that laughing have a lot of downsides and can bring many harmful effects as dislocated jaws, prompt asthma attacks, headaches and cardiac arrhythmia.

    To conclude, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that children laugh about 400 times a day whereas adults only 15 since I reckon this fact is due to kids do not have any important issue. Laughter does not come easily to everyone but even fake laughter has the same beneficial effect than real laughter.

  10. We all know how pleasant it is to laugh, as it makes us feel better. In fact, laughing is supposed to be the best medicine against any problem. If we ask people the reason why the laugh, they'll probably talk you about jokes and memes. However, this isn't completely true, as most of the time we laugh is when we are with friends. Laughter can be a sign that you're having a enjoyable time with them, but also that you are in a comfortable situation.

    All the people laugh everyday, some more than others, depending on their mood, on what they are doing and even the age you have. It is said that children laugh 400 times a day, whereas adults only 20. Furthermore, according to a study, on average a person laughs seven times for every ten minutes of conversation.

    It is also said that the more you laugh, the longer you will live, and although it's just an expression, I'm going to give you some advantages of laughing. For example, it decreases the presence of cholesterol in the blood, it promotes digestion, it potentiates social relationships, etc.

    In my case, I consider myslef a joker, which means that I'm a person who laughs easily. However, I usually laugh with simple things, but don't often with things which makes normal people laugh.

  13. Laughter is something natural that we all do. And constantly this makes us feel better. But, not everyone finds it so easy to laugh. What good things has laughing got?

    When we laugh, our body relaxes and endorphins are realased into the blood stream. Moreover, it is a good way to remove the stress.

    A laugther terapy session may improve the cardiovascular functions and oxygen levels in the blood may be boosted. In addition, many studies show that children laugh about 400 times a day whereas adults laugh only 15.

    Front my point of view, laughter is the best therapy that can exist for a person. Not only that, but also it can remove the stress and it is good for our health. If you laugh all the time you will be happier!

Laughter is a non-verbal emotional expression and these sounds, which we typically make when in the grip of quite strong emotions, are more like animal calls than they are like our normal speech. If we ask someone what they usually laugh at, they will say that they laugh at jokes or humour, but we laugh very often. Experts say that in an informal conversation we laugh an average of 7 times every 10 minutes. We also make very strange noises when we laugh – from wheezes and squeaks to gasps and snorts – and each sound simply reflects the muscles in the chest squeezing out air from our ribcages under very high pressures.


    On the one hand, laughing is very normal, not only humans do it, but also other animals like monkeys or rats. Besides, we have heard many times the sencence “laughter is the best medicine”, and on one side this sentence is true. Laughing causes your body to secrete some substances that make you feel better. Also, we usually associate laughter with a state of happiness, so if you’re laughing you’re probably happy too. What’s more, laughing makes you lose weight because you’re contracting your muscles and it helps tone your abs and lose weight. Therefore, laughing helps you look better. Last but not least, laughing can help you solve mental illness such as stress or anxiety. Having a good time laughing with your friends helps you forget your problems and feel better.


    On the other hand, there are bad things about laughing too. The physical problems of laughing include the force of laughing can dislocated Jaws, prompt asthma attacks, cause headaches and make hernias protrude. Besides, it can provoke cardiac arrhythmia, syncope or even emphysema. Moreover, we all know that there are moments where you shouldn’t laugh because they are serious but… what about the times when you shouldn’t laugh because you might die? For example while you’re eating. There are choking hazards, such as ingesting food during belly laughs. In addition, some people can develop mental illnesses like depression from laughter. Many people don’t know the difference between laughter and happiness and euphoria. They want to be in a state of maximum happiness all the time even though happiness is momentary; we can’t be happy all the time. That’s why many people end up in states of maximum sadness like depression.


    All in all, laughing is good but we must be careful because sometimes it can be dangerous. From my point of view, laughing is very important and we should do it every day.
