BEING A TEACHER....

BEING A TEACHER IS A DIFFICULT TASK NOWADAYS, SO I DECIDED TO FOLLOW THIS PIECE OF ADVICE BY BRUCE LEE:

Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.

Watermelons are sold here!!

What is the PASSIVE VOICE? What is the opposite? Why and when do we use the passive voice? Click on the label passive voice, on the right-hand side column of the blog and you will discover some interesting facts about it.

PASSIVE VOICE

- We use the passive voice when the subject is not known or it is not relevant or just because we face a matter from a different perspective. For example, when we see the advertisement 'TOMATOES ARE SOLD HERE', do we really care about the name of the seller or the farmer? Not at all. The important thing is the fact that you can buy tomatoes here. On the contrary, if Brad Pitt was the person selling tomatoes, we would never use the passive voice and we would say: Do you know what? Brad Pitt sells tomatoes on the road to Granada.

- You only include the agent when it gives some information. If it doesn't give any information, we tend to omit it (remember our 'pasiva refleja'  >>  Se venden tomates aquí : tomatoes are sold here.) WE NEVER SAY: by someone, by people and we rarely say: by him, her.

- Our indirect object can the be subject of the passive voice.
Example:   ACTIVE  >>   We gave Mary a wonderful present for her birthday.
PASSIVE  >>  Mary was given a wonderful present for her birthday.
or  A wonderful present was given to Mary for her birthday.
But remember that the sentence "We gave a wonderful present to Mary for her birthday" has got only passive possibility (A wonderful present was given to Mary for her birthday).

- BE CAREFUL with sentences whose subject is 'NOBODY' because the sentence is negative.
Example: Ann wasn't offered the job (<< Nobody offered Ann the job)

- 'I was born in Chicago' is actually a passive sentence.

  1. Summer has almost arrived and it is very hot. People need to drink something fresh so they do not have that much heat.

They are starting to buy ice creams, melons and watermelons.

There are many quantities of watermelons that are bought which produce a lot of profits for the sellers. We all need fresh things and a piece of watermelons is the best to cool off.

This year the watermelons weigh more what will cost more.

  6. A passive sentence is a sentence in which the subject does not perform the action of the verb. In fact, in a passive sentence, the action of the verb is done to the subject.

In a passive sentence, the person or thing doing the action (the agent) is usually preceded by the word "by" and we only include the agent when it gives some information, If it doesn't give any information, we tend to omit it.

The passive voice is used when we want to focus attention on the person or thing affected by the action. Normally, the performer of the action, or the agent, comes first and is made the subject of the verb and then we use the active form of the verb. The other person or thing is made the object of the verb.

The opposite of passive voice is active voice. In general, the active voice makes your writing stronger, more direct, and more active.
