Coming to Edinburgh at Easter with the old rockers?
We
will be having our first meeting next Wednesday, 28th April, in the
Language Department during the break. We will see if there are enough people interested to form a group.
Everybody is welcomed even if they decide not to come in the end!!!
First clue >>>> Have a look at the information about EDINBURGH 2017 below and in my blog. Then, if you are interested, fill in this form
as soon as you can because we need to do everything very quickly to buy
our flights cheaper. You must also bear in mind that if you fill in the form
and you don't want to participate later, it is no problem as we will
really know if we are going when you make the first payment and that
will be in October.
Our sixth experience?????
Stay alert for the clues and keep tracking...
And remember our meetings will be called 'clues' from now on!!
Some exercises for you to do:
Listening exercise to do: Old tech (6 Minute English, BBC Learning English)
To begin with, a floppy disk, diskette or disk became popular in the 1970s. A standard 8in, the same as 200mm, floppy disk had 237.25kB of storage space, it was enough for 15 seconds of audio. Dell stopped making computers with unbuilt floppy disks in 2003. Nowadays, very few manufactures make them, and they are used by the US nuclear weapons force.
On the one hand, The Pentagon is the headquarters of the US Department of Defense, which is located in Airlington in Virginia. It was designed by an American architect called George Bergstrom. It is one of the largest building in the world.
A report said that the Pentagon from now until 2020 will replace all the system, because the replacement parts for the system are difficult to find as they are so obsolete.
On the other hand, “give up” means stop doing, trying and surrender.
A floppy disk, also called a diskette or just disk, is a type of disk storage composed of a disk of thin and flexible magnetic storage medium, sealed in a rectangular plastic enclosure lined with fabric that removes dust particles. These formats are usually handled by older equipment since floppy disk have some limited uses. Nowadays, they have been superseded by data storage with much greater capacity, such as USB flash drive, portable external hard disk drives…
Floppy disks became ubiquitous during the 1980s and 1990s in their use with personal computers to distribute software, transfer data, and create backups. Floppy disks were often used to store a computer's operating system.
In my view, I think that USA’s Government is a bit crazy controlling US nuclear arsenal with computers with floppy disks. Fortunately, they say that they would have updated it by the end of next year.
All in all, in my opinion the floppy disk was a very important invention, but now they are obsolete so we have new data storage like portable hard disk drives which has got a big data storage. In addition, USA government has realized that they have to update their ancient machines.
