Time to bite the bullet!!

We are living very hard times with the Covid-19 pandemic, so it is time to bite the bullet (The English We Speak, BBC Learning English) and try to do something useful.


With regard to health, face masks are said to be essential to keep healthy (listening exercise: Should we wear a face mask? (6 Minute English, BBC learning English)

This summer we will be revising first the FUTURE TENSES with our 1º ESO students by having a look at this unit:


                               WE 💗 HOLIDAYS !!!

You will do exercises on page 94 and then try to translate this sentence into English: "¿Qué tiempo suele hacer en tu pueblo?" and answer it.

What about my 4º ESO students? The first task for this summer is to revise the REPORTED SPEECH. First of all, let's revise the theoretical part here: 4º ESO

  1. Nowadays there are a lot of websites where you can watch films and series. Netflix is one of them and probably the most famous of them. This platform allows you to watch a lot of films and series at a very low price and gives you 4 profiles using only one account so you can divide the price between four people.

    During the last months we have been at home. Because of this we have been waking up and going to bed later. But some people have been spending the whole night watching series in Netflix. If you do this one night when you can't sleep and you don't have anything to do it could be OK, but the problem comes when you don't sleep at night because you're always in Netflix.

    Netflix can make you addict to watch series. When a episode finish, you only have five seconds to close it before the next one starts. And when an episode starts, it is very difficult to close it. In the long run, spending the night can make you not to arrive to school or work in time or not to sleep well. Some people even stop meeting their family and friends before they prefer stay at home watching series.

    I think watching series can help you to spend your free time but you shouldn't spend the whole night watching series. You also have to do other things and find other ways to spend your free time. In my case, I have two profiles in Netflix (one from my cousin's account and the other from my aunt's one) and I can watch a serie while my parents are watching another one. But I usually spend thirty minutes or an hour, and not everyday. I also have other hobbies, like drawing, and I am taking advantage of the quarantine and the summer so I am learning new things, like lettering and cursive in cyrillic.

  3. We are going through a difficult time, because of everything that is happening with the Covid-19.
    And although things have improved in Spain, we should not trust, because the consequences are already being observed, there are outbreaks of Covid-19 throughout the country, and this is a big problem because as one gets out of control, we could return to confinement.
    In my opinion we should not carry out de-escalation, if we had waited for there to be no case of Covid-19, we would only have to worry about the tourists and it would be much more controlled, but since this has not been the case, we must be aware and wear the mask to avoid keep spreading this virus.
    I believe that if we do all this until there is a vaccine we will ensure that there are no more deaths from this virus that has already killed millions of people in the world.

  6. I´m sure that sometimes you don´t have to do anything because it is your free day or you are just a bit lazy in a cold winter evening so you get your laptop and start watching Netflix. Who wouldn´t do that?.

    There are many websites where you can watch both films and series , even in any language, but , the most popular one is probably Netflix , which is an American entertainment company that allows you to watch any film or series and you can have a wonderful time with family and friends or even with yourself.

    Although Netflix is a good option to clear your mind , spending the whole day watching it can be a problem because it can become an addiction . Some people are obsessed and, what´s more , they can spend the night without sleep . When an episode finishes ,it is almost impossible not to watch another one. It is also easy to chat with your friends and just give them an excuse not to meet as you want to continue watching Netflix.

    In my case , I don´t have Netflix and I don´t think I need it . I like watching series but I watch them on another page. I can watch them online or download them and the quality is also very good.

    From my point of view , watching series can be a good option to enjoy yourself and have a good time , but, you shouldn´t spend so much time , you should spend your time doing other things that can make you happy, too.

  8. I'm sure we have all heard the expression "Netflix and Chill" and yes, although it is a great plan for a lazy day or a meet up with some friends it can also turn into a problem with ease if we spend more time than we should and we become addicted.

    On the one hand, Netflix is a good option to reduce our stress after a long day, when we just want to relax, get over it and maybe have a laugh with our favorite show.
    Moreover, apart of its entertainment purpose you can also use it as a fun way of learning a language. Thanks to its many language option and subtitles you can improve your listening or reading skills (even both at the same time). I do really recommend it to learn some idioms and to get used to the different accents of a language.

    On the other hand, being addicted to Netflix can make you waste a lot of valuable time. This problem affects mainly teenagers and it triggers difficulties of concentration when they study or in some cases a complete lack of study. Furthermore, a lack of sleep in the long run is a risk for your health.

    To sum up, I believe that Netflix is a great tool ,but you must use it carefully and have self-control.
    I personally do not have an account because I don't watch series very often, but I used to have one and I enjoyed it.

  9. Television is probably one of the most popular hobbies that people have, especially teenagers. They spend hours and hours in front of the television watching films or series in Netflix. But they have to be careful because Netflix can become an addiction.

    On the one hand, Netflix can be a good option if you want to relax after a whole day at work. You can disconnect for a while and have a great time watching your favourite series. Moreover, Netflix allows you to enjoy a lot of series, films or programs at a very low price. Not only that, but it also allows you the option to choose subtitles in another language, which is very useful if you want to improve your language skills.

    On the other hand, spending a lot of time watching Netflix can be harmful for your health. How many times have you spent more than 3 hours watching a series without realizing it? I'm sure that many. That can create an addition. In fact, many people accept that they have a real Netflix addition.

    To sum up, I believe that Netflix is a good platform which offers a lot of entertainment. However, you have to be careful with the time you spend watching it because it can create you an addition.

  11. Nowadays, people watch series and films through platforms like ‘Netflix’, which is the most used. But there are more of them, for instance ‘HBO’. In these apps we can find many things to watch. We do it when we stay at home chilling because it is a way to kill the time.

    During the quarantine, these platforms have won many new subscriptions. With so much free time, people have spent long hours watching TV. This is a good option when we don’t have anything to do, or if we want to rest at home relaxing. Moreover, we can also find interesting documentaries, biographical or history films. So, we are learning something and discovering new things that we don’t know.

    However, not everything is good, but also there are bad things. For instance, there are some people who get hooked on the series, and they can’t stop watching them. This can trigger insomnia, or stop doing other things instead. Besides, the ease of seeing everything we want as many times as we want makes that other activities such as reading stop doing. Even so, many people continue doing that.

    On the whole, I think that it is something that we can do in our free time, but we have to know when we should stop. In my opinion, I love watching series but I do it when I have enough free time, so there are days when I don’t see anything.

  12. Since its founding in 1997, the video streaming service Netflix has become one of the biggest obsessions for students across the world. Recent research shows that Netflix addiction is quite a problem among youngsters, nowadays.

    To begin with, 9 out of 10 students use Netflix and 17% of them binge-watch - meaning they watch 3 or more episodes in a row. It has been shown that this type of addiction can have a serious negative impact on a person’s life. It affects your health, your body and your social life. Spending so many hours in front of the TV screen can lead to eye pain, headaches, fatigue, sleeping disorder and even obesity.

    In addition, people who become addicted to TV tend to have poor attention and self-control, feel guilty about wasting time and experience fear of failure. What’s more, a behaviour disorder and decreased school performance are linked to it.

    To put it in a nutshell, it has been shown that there are increasing addictive screen behaviours in both children and adults. I strongly believe that we should not let screens take control of our lives and we should take steps to reduce screentime in our lives and its effects.
