BEING A TEACHER....

BEING A TEACHER IS A DIFFICULT TASK NOWADAYS, SO I DECIDED TO FOLLOW THIS PIECE OF ADVICE BY BRUCE LEE:

Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.

Breakfast, the key to a healthy life!

Breakfast is and has always been very important in our lives and in all the civilisations around the world. Why? Because it gives you the energy to face the rest of the day. Soldiers in the front, farmers in their fields, clerks at the office, students and teachers at school...

Listening exercise for you to do:   Is breakfast the most important meal of the day?  (6 Minute English, BBC Learning English)

What does the singer of the song "Breakfast in America" want for breakfast? Listen to the song and tell me the answer in your comment. Besides, What do you usually have for breakfast?

In our English classes early in the morning we have got a big problem we haven't solved so far: Certain students arrive, put their schoolbags on their desks and are out like a light as soon as Albert starts talking. After some research a fact has shed light on this problem: our students don't have enough (or anything at all) for breakfast!!! Will there be light at the end of the tunnel?  I hope so. After reading this post maybe our students will see the light and stop giving no importance to breakfast. Here you've presented with 4 expressions connected with light. You can check the meaning of each of them just below in the English in a Minute section.

                                                                           Who is she?

Who is she?

                                                                               Who is he?

And here's a version with the lyrics both in English and Spanish for you to discover what the singer wanted for breakfast.

Scream while you can!!

"It's close to midnight / And something evil's lurking in the dark / Under the moonlight / You see a sight that almost stops your heart / You try to scream / But terror takes the sound before you make it / You start to freeze / As horror looks you right between the eyes / You're paralyzed"

What do these words remind you of? Which song?

Yes, Halloween is coming!

Here's my musical hint for today:  Thriller by Michael Jackson. Here's a version with the lyrics for you to check!

Interviewer: Hello, Maria. Thanks for coming in for the interview.
María: It's my pleasure. Thanks for ………………………… me.

1: invite / hearing to / inviting / listen to

Interviewer: Well, as you know, the company ………………………… and we have an opening in our HR department. We're creating a new role for someone to lead our training and development within the company.

2: expanded / will expand / has been expanding / was expanded

María: Yes, I very much think that my skills and experience are a good fit for what you're looking for.
Interviewer: That sounds great. So, your CV looks strong, though it would be good if you could give us an overview, in your own words, of what you've been doing ………………………… the past four years or so.

                                            3: since / on / over / between

María: Well, in my first job, four years ago, I was working for a small HR services provider which offered HR services, including L&D, to corporate clients.
Interviewer: OK, so it was only B2B?
María: Yes, we only offered services to other companies, not B2C.
Interviewer: Right, and it says here you then ………………………… that company about three years ago.

                                        4: stayed / left / paid for / bought

María: Yes, that's right. I was looking for a little more stability and also to be part of a larger organisation. So I joined a company with around one hundred staff and a small HR team.                                 5: a few of / less of / fewer than / many more

Interviewer: I see. And, so why do you want to change jobs now?

                                6: trust / intentions / feedback / complaints

Interviewer: Yes, that's right.
María: Well, an organisation of this size would give me the scope to specialise in L&D. I'm also a big ………………………… of your brand and feel fully aligned with your image and values.

                                        7: follower / boss / critic / bang

Interviewer: Well, that all sounds good. And I can see you have an L&D qualification.
María: Yes, I got a diploma two years ago. I am also currently working on a further diploma in psychology, with a specific focus on learning and performance management.
Interviewer: Very good. Well, it looks like you have the qualifications and experience we're looking for. What do you think will be the main ………………………… of coming to a much larger company?

                                        8: ideas / mistakes / challenges / cons

María: I can see that it might be perceived as a weakness to not have experience in an organisation of this size, though I see that it could also be a benefit. I won't be bringing too many preconceived and inflexible ideas with me to the role.
Interviewer: Yes, that would be a good thing.
María: Who would I mostly work with on a daily basis?
Interviewer: Well, there's the HR manager who you would ………………………… And then the HR team, which currently has six people in it. There's usually an intern or two who you can get some support from also.

María: OK. Thanks.
Interviewer: Great. So, thanks again for coming in today. We'll be discussing all candidates next week and then I'll get back to you …………………………the end of next week to let you know the outcome.

                                                10: on / in / after /by

María: Thank you for your time. I'd welcome the opportunity to continue discussing this role with you.

We can't stop working

The life of a student or a teacher is like that. There are no Sundays or holidays!!!  We can't stop working as we have so much to learn and the chances are few, as the song says. However, this is amazing side of these two jobs: you never get bored!! Anyway, if you like your job, that will be no problem.

Clash of Titans

It is a well-known fact that I am a passionate of tennis. This very early rainy morning Youtube gave me the opportunity to travel back in time to my teen days when two of my favourite tennis players were on their summit of their careers. Surprisingly, you can come across some interesting pieces of information in this documentary, bearing in mind that Borg was supposed to be as cold as ice and McEnroe was known all over the world for his bad manners on court. I hope you will enjoy the video and that it is easy for you to understand it.

What a scary situation!!! Living on your own, with your parents, sharing...????

In less than a year's time, you will be living away from home and you will be so eager to become independent. You imagine it will be an ideal situation for you to live: wonderful experiences, no parents around to tell you what to do, no curfews, no limits... However, it is not all gold that glitters! No one to buy the bread for you, no one to do the cooking, washing or any of the household activities a house requires, no one to wake you up and tell you to go to class.... And finally, the money matters!!! Actually, this paradise you are dreaming about can become a hell.

Anyway, there is no need to exaggerate. There must be a balance and you must always be practical choosing the best option life offers. Let's see some awkward situations and the solutions found.

And now let's analyse the situation from a comic point of view.
