BEING A TEACHER....

BEING A TEACHER IS A DIFFICULT TASK NOWADAYS, SO I DECIDED TO FOLLOW THIS PIECE OF ADVICE BY BRUCE LEE:

Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.

You're simply the best!!

As with my students in 2º Bachillerato, I have always said that the best thing of all is my students, and this time I mean my students in 1º Bachillerato. You don't know how much this little present you gave to me today means to me. That is really what I have always worked for, as a teacher. You know you will always have me to help you at any time and I'll try with my blog and site to provide you with all the necessary information  for your Selectivity exam next year.

As a little sample of my gratitude, here's a Selectivity exam for you to do. In the next post I will give you some possible answers.

Here's the text to read...

And here are the activities to do...

A. COMPREHENSION. Answer the questions using your own words.

1. Why was Stuart Pike alone on the plane?

2. Why was it the best trip in his life?

3. Did Stuart Pike watch any films? Justify your answer.

B. LEXICON.

4. Give one synonym of 'COMPLETE' (verb)  (line 8)

5. Give one opposite of 'LANDING'  (noun)   (line 13)

6. Find one synonym in the text for 'SATISFY'  (verb)

7. Find int the text the WORD which has the following definition:  "to promote a person to a higher rank or position"

C. GRAMMAR.

8. Put the following sentence into INDIRECT SPEECH:

Mr Pike said: "It is the most pleasant flight I've ever had"

9. Put the following sentence into DIRECT SPEECH:

He was invited by the captain to sit with him and watch the landing.

10. Put the following sentence into the PASSIVE VOICE:

The flight attendants gave him everything he wanted.

11. Complete the following sentence with the correct form of the verb in brackets:

He could (GO) .................. to sleep on one of the 14 beds if he wanted to.

D. PRODUCTION.

12.   a) Describe an interesting journey that you have made.

        b) What is your favourite method of travel?

CONGRATULATIONS to our students at the IES Mediterráneo (Salobreña) for their good results in the PEvAU exams (Selectivity). All of them have passed it and they have obtained a mean of 6.7 in English.

Here's my musical hint dedicated to all my students, especially those in Bachillerato, because THEY ARE SIMPLY THE BEST: The Best by Tina Turner. Here's a version with the lyrics for you to sing along!!

Some activities for you to do:

"All work and no play makes Jack/Jill a dull boy/girl"

Mind Your Language - The most funny* English class

* They are not using here "the funniest" so as to make an emphasis.

Unlike our students, we live in a fake society, we have a fake educational system... we can even have the biggest fake in tennis!!!

He told me he hadn't done it.

But why?? He felt so anxious that he couldn't do it!!! However, anxiety can also be good for humans to evolve. It is obvious that if you can overcome anxiety, you will be much stronger after that experience, so anxiety is not that bad in the end!!!

English in a minute: "In the end" vs "At the end"

Here are some articles for you to read about the issue:

And now let's do this listening exercise: Evolution and anxiety (6 Minute English, BBC Learning English).

Let's talk about the Reported Speech. Can you tell me how it is also called? What is the opposite? Where do you usually find many examples of Reported Speech? Police questioning / interrogation could also be another typical situation.

What is the BACK SHIFT process? What is the opposite of 'back'? what does 'shift' mean? In which technological device can you find this word?

Have a look at previous posts in this blog. Labels: reported speech , Reported speech exercise

For those of you sitting B1, B2... exams at the Official Language School, here's a piece of advice for you to bear in mind.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NON-BILINGUAL STUDENTS!!!!

MORE BREAKING NEWS >>>>> CONGRATULATIONS TO Mª José García and Andrea Gutiérrez (4º ESO) for obtaining their B1 in English in the Official Language School!!!! In September I'm sure we'll have again better news when the rest of the students who entered the exam and didn' t pass all the parts have a second chance. Et félicitations à tous ceux qui ont réussi aussi dans leurs examens de français à l'École Officielle des Langues. COME ON , YOU CAN !!! Allez, vous pouvez!!!

BREAKING NEWS  >>>  Again congratulations to our non-bilingual students in 4º ESO for their projects on Braveheart as they have just been published once again in the ESL Times Magazine. Have a look at it!!!

It is true that our non-bilingual students could have done much better, but the results are incredible, especially in the level of 4º ESO.

Here are my recommendations for the summer:

We have just finished our final exams, the Selectivity exams, the Official Language School exams in French and in English, our Music School exams.... and it is time to come to some conclusions. Express them by using IMPOSSIBLE OR UNREAL CONDITIONALS. Let's revise how we make them and the two exceptions will be analysing next year in 1º Bachillerato. For further information on the comparatives you can visit my site.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

3. IMPOSSIBLE or UNREAL CONDITIONALS

They are based on impossible situations which we cannot change at all.
SITUATION: Not all the students in the level of 4º ESO studied enough and did all the things they should have done.
If + PAST PERFECT......            >>> CONDITIONAL PERFECT
If Raúl had handed in his folder, some compositions and the projects of the readers he had to read, he would have clearly passed English in June.   BUT he didn't.

Exception number 2

Combination of a past fact that cannot be changed and a quality that you don't have, but that you could have (it is still not impossible)

Example: Rita said she would have passed English in June if Albert weren't so strict.

Exception number 3

Combination of a past fact whose effects are still permanent.

Example: Albert replied that she would not a have such a low level in English now if she had worked as hard as her friend María, but unfortunately she didn't.
