Groundhog Day is a legend that traverses centuries, its origins clouded in the mists of time with ethnic cultures and animals awakening on specific dates. Groundhog Day is celebrated on 2nd February every year in the United States and Canada, it is the day that the Groundhog comes out of his hole after a long winter. If the day is cloudy the Groundhog takes it as a sign of spring, but if the day is sunny he takes it as a sign of six weeks more of bad weather.
ResponderEliminarThe Groundhog most famous is Phil, he lives in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania where he goes out of his hole every year on 2nd February. This year he has predicted six weeks more of bad weather in Pennsylvania.
I think that Phil is enough receivable because he has succeeded more than 70%.
Really, six more weeks of winter?Although, now one month later, they are less. I don't like neither winter nor autumn, I prefer summer. I'm waiting nervous for the arrival of summer.
ResponderEliminarFirstly, Groundhog Day is celebrated on 2nd February every year in the USA and Canada. The tradition behind the famous groundhog goes back to medieval times when there was a superstition that all hibernating animals emerged from their caves and dens to check the weather on Candlemas, which is halfway between the winter solstice in December and the vernal equinox in March.
Seeing their shadows would mean winter would go on for another six weeks, and they could go back to sleep, according to the tradition.
The tradition came to America with the early German settlers who arrived in Pennsylvania.
If it doesn't see a shadow something that has happened just 15 times in Phil's history, would have meant spring is around the corner.
This animal also receives the name woodchuck.
Poor groundhog, it felt sad after politician sacked it.

GROUNDHOG DAY
ResponderEliminarGroundhog Day takes place every February 2nd and it is a popular tradition in the United States. Thousands of people gather at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to await the spring forecast from a special groundhog called Punxsutawney Phil.
It is the day that the Groundhog comes out of his hole after a long winter sleep to look for his shadow. On the one hand, if he sees it, he regards it as an omen of six more weeks of bad weather and returns to his hole. On the other hand, if the day is cloudy and, therefore, shadowless, he takes it as a sign of spring and stays above ground.
Groundhog Day originates from an ancient celebration of the midway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox—the day right in the middle of astronomical winter. According to superstition, sunny skies that day means a stormy and cold second half of winter while cloudy skies means the arrival of warm weather.
Phil was declared as America's official forecasting groundhog in 1887 and since its first prediction in that year, Phil has seen his shadow 102 times (including this year) and not seen it on just 17 occasions. There are nine missing years in the record, but Phil has issued a forecast without exception.
However, there is controversy with Phil due to its imprecision. For instance, in 2013, Phil forecasted an early spring, but bitter cold and snow annoyed the eastern U.S. until the month of March that year. The prosecuting attorney in Butler County, Ohio, went as far as to seek the death penalty for Phil for “misrepresentation of early spring”. Poor Phil! How can a groundhog be prosecuted?
From my point of view, the Groundhog Day is an interesting tradition as there is no similar one in Spain. It is very curious because this forecast system has been used by farmers since more than a century. Phil may be wrong sometimes and cannot predict accurately if winter will be longer or not, but I think it must not be prosecuted. It is very cute!

The Groundhog is celebrated in the USA to predetict the weather of the following weeks. It is an American tradition celebrated on the 2 February but it is known around the world. I think it can't be true because an animal can´t know how will be the weather. Apart from that, I think that tradtions are interesting and good for the people because the and have fun, as in celebrations and festivities.
ResponderEliminarIn Salobreña, there is another similar tradition that says : " el día de la estrella, 40 días como ella". That means that it is taken one day in April, and depending on the weather of this day, there are going to be 40 days like it. Old people think that it is true, however I think that it is only an old tradition.

ResponderEliminarThe Groundhog Day is a very special day in Canada and the United States, it is celebrated on February 2 consisting of a groundhog named Phil is removed from the shelter of his burrow in a tree trunk near dawn. According to tradition, if Phil sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter in North America. If it isn't (because it is clear, for example), spring will come soon. The tradition of Groundhog Day has religious origins. It all started with Candlemas Day, a festive day in the Christian tradition in which, for hundreds of years in Europe, the priests blessed candles and distributed. Those who participated stated that if the sky was clear that day, the winter would be long. The Romans brought the tradition to the Germans, who concluded that if the sun appeared that day, a hedgehog could see his shadow and that would indicate that there would be six more weeks of cold, or a "second winter".
In conclusion, it may seem strange this type of celebrations but we think that there are different cultures in the world and to each their celebrations are the most important.

If, however, looks out and sees his shadow, because it is a sunny day, it will get and winter will last another six weeks.
Today, the most famous groundhog of Punxsutawney Phil United States, announced that winter will last six weeks.
I think it's a peasant party and not a way to know the weather in the future, but if people has a good time and have fun, welcome!

ResponderEliminarIn my opinion, this tradition isn't reliable, because I don't think the groundhog knows what time we will have in winter or how long it will last. I think the weather can change in any moment of the day and for example, if today is raining, tomorrow can be sunny. However, we must respect all traditions from all over the world. =)

ResponderEliminarIn my opinion, that it´s a very strage tradition like too many others, it´s impossible that only one groundhog could know if will rain or not
