BEING A TEACHER....

BEING A TEACHER IS A DIFFICULT TASK NOWADAYS, SO I DECIDED TO FOLLOW THIS PIECE OF ADVICE BY BRUCE LEE:

Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.

 >>> You can create your own meme here: memegenerator.net

Not long ago we were talking about health and advances we have had in this field: cloning, transplants, penicillin, new treatments...

Here's a listening exercise: It's all in the genes (BBC Learning English, 6 Minute English)

Articles to read:
So, pay attention to these two questions, try to find the difference and answer them:
Who do you look like in your family?
Who have you taken after in your family?

LINGOHACK  >>>  Republicans against Guantanamo closure, Plastic found in Mars bars & Gorilla born at UK zoo.

  1. By studying the DNA of 17,000 people, 50 research groups identified 24 new genetic links to diseases such as bipolar disorder, Crohn's disease, heart disease, diabetes types 1 and 2, rheumatoid arthritis and hypertension, tripling the number of genes previously associated with them.
In the study, scientists analyzed DNA samples from 2,000 patients per disease, comparing them with 3,000 control samples from healthy volunteers, and looked around 500,000 genetic differences in each sample. The full results of the Wellcome Trust Case Control Project have been published in the journals Nature and Nature Genetics.
The scientists involved in the Human Genome Project, which began in 1990, completed the sequence of nearly 3,000 million "letters" that contain human genetic instructions. This important achievement will change medicine forever, while scientists are moving rapidly towards its goal of identifying all our genes and know what each function does.
Scientists have discovered many genes that play important roles in human disease.
    genetic defects
The genetic defect responsible for the most common inherited form of mental retardation, Fragile X syndrome, was identified by Fellows March of Dimes. Other findings identified specific genetic mutations responsible: Cystic fibrosis, a disorder of the lungs and digestive system often fatal, achondroplasia, a form of dwarfism, neurofibromatosis, hereditary diseases of the nervous system.

  2. Today science is advancing at an amazing speed and everything of our life has changed beyond recognition. It constitutes an attempt to conquer the forces of nature and aims to give man increasing power over his surroundings.

In the daily life of a man science is visible. For instance, he can now travel much faster and more comfortably than in the past. Bullock carts in villages and horse carriages in town are being replaced by tractors, trucks auto-carriages in and cars. In times of distress, wireless telegraphy renders extraordinary service. A plane or ship in danger can at once contact on wireless the nearest aerodrome or port and get timely help.

Human body has been thoroughly studied and most of the diseases are controlled by life-giving medicines and miraculous surgery. Plastic surgery can make an ugly woman a beautiful lady.

Thus, the importance of science in our life cannot be denied. However, it should be used with care and caution. It should only be used for the welfare of humanity.
