The environment is an important issue and worms can be the solution. Worms are not always a sign of a negative thing. They can have also a positive side, like in the case of bookworms ( Good news for bookworms!!! ). Do you happen to know what a 'bookworm' is?
Here are some interesting articles for you to read about the issue:

According to a study from the University of Queensland, it has been discovered that a species of worm in the Zophobas family can survive its during all life cycle on a polystyrene diet. These worms are known by the name "Zophobas morio" or commonly called "superworms".
ResponderEliminarThe characteristic that they have to be able to feed on plastic is thanks to some bacterial enzymes, which produce the intestinal microbes of the worms. These microbes digest plastic with the help of enzymes, transforming it into food for the worms.
This could be valuable for advances in recycling, as it would achieve to reduce tons of plastic produced, that after all, these plastics generally arrive to the oceans, what has a strong impact in the ecosystems.
The study team reveals that several enzymes are capable of degrading polystyrene and styrene, both plastics very common in our daily life. What they trying to do is replicate what happens in the intestines of the worms, to produce the enzymes and extract the proteins in the laboratory on a large scale for more efficient use in the future.
