At the beginning of the World Cup every team, like the Spanish national team, was saying: "I wish we could be in the final in New York". Now two teams will make this wish true. "I wish..." and "What if...?" are two ways of expressing a wish. You can also use "If only...". 
You can also use these expressions to refer to regrets for actions that have already happened and cannot be changed. For example, let's imagine what Mbappé said after the match against Spain: "I wish we had played better. What if they hadn't scored the penalty. If only we had had a better luck".
