BEING A TEACHER....

BEING A TEACHER IS A DIFFICULT TASK NOWADAYS, SO I DECIDED TO FOLLOW THIS PIECE OF ADVICE BY BRUCE LEE:

Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.

It is time to do our best

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU ALL!!!

Yes, my dear students in 2º Bachillerato, it is time to do our best. It has been a great pleasure to have you as students all these years. Most of you have been 6 long years with me and coping with my whip and my relentless rhythm so as to comply with the commitment I agreed with you, that is, to do the best I could in order to take you to the summit and here we are.

I know some of you don't really fancy the way I am as a teacher, but I have tried my best to get the best out of you. I'm afraid in the end I just try to be a mirror and reflect the reality, which I try to make the best as possible. The same mirror where every morning I cannot see Rachnar, but someone more similar to Homer Simpson.

Anyway, I wish the best of lucks in the future, especially in your Selectivity exams and the degree you choose. I'll put your present into the fridge to keep it cool and drink it up when good news from you come!

Some activities for you to do:

My musical hint for today to cheer you up: Get Down On It by Kool & The Gang. Here's a version with the lyrics for you to dance and sing along!!

If I were you, I'd...

The school year is coming to an end and I would like you to tell us about your experiences, so can you please make a comment giving some tips to your fellow students that next year will be doing the year you are about to finish.

Try to be sincere and, using appropriate advice structures, tell them what they should do. Include the level you are referring to at the beginning of your comment.

Here's an example. Pay attention to the structures used and also have a look at this (and then listen to the episode).

Other examples:
I'm a student of 2º ESO and I would like to give you some advice if you are in 2º ESO next year with Albert:

  • I think you should....
  • You must....
  • You have to.....
  • Study everyday...
  • Don't  keep your things untidy....
  • If I were you, I would....
  • If I were in your shoes, I would...
  • You'd better....
  • Maybe you could...
  • Try doing something (example: Try doing some comments during the summer time)
  • Perhaps it's a good idea to ....
  • And remember TO ADVISE, SPELT WITH AN S, IS THE VERB (I'd advise you to do sth) and ADVICE, SPELT WITH A C, IS AN UNCOUNTABLE NOUN (My piece of advice for you is...  OR I will give you some advice about...)

Write a comment giving your advice and tell me if you find any other useful structure or vocabulary connected with the issue.

Here are some activities I would do, if I were in your shoes:

Do you remember what I told you a few weeks ago about the possibility of going to Dublin next year? Next Tuesday, 24th May, we will be having a meeting at the school assembly room to give you some information and to make a survey to see if there are enough students interested to organize the study trip.

Here's a document about our trip in 2016.

And the proposal for next year...

Visit Dublin! If I were you, I would go!

Virtual reality

Some of our students seem to be living a virtual reality all the time and forget about their daily routines. This is not good for them because they don't really face the problems that matter, but not everything is bad when talking about virtual reality.

Mind + heart + .... determination = SUCCESS

Carlos Álcaraz's grandfather always told him that what you need to succeed in life is to have a strong mind, to do things with your heart and... BALLS! (Sorry for reproducing his exact words), that is to say, DETERMINATION. We can note that it is almost the same mixture Nadal has used in his career. Well, along your career, you'll come across many hurdles, difficult situations, injuries.... and even failures. Then you'll need something extra, that is: RESILIENCE!!!

Well, it seems that Spanish tennis level will survive when Nadal takes his decision to retire.
